Camphor is a naturally occurring terpenoid that can be found in trees of the laurel family and in rosemary leaves. Camphor can also be produced synthetically. Camphor is used for its scent, in religious ceremonies, and in some parts of the world as an ingredient in cooking. For medicinal purposes camphor is used in some topical products to produce a feeling of cooling; it also has slight anesthetic and antimicrobial effects. In personal care products camphor can be found in pain-relief topical products as well as in nail enamel.
Avoid products that list any of the following names in the ingredients:
• Camphor
• 1,7,7-Trimethylbicyclo(2.2.1)heptan-2-one
• 2-Bornanone
• Gum camphor
• 2-Camphanone
